“THE BEGINNING OF THE VILLAGE OF CUMMINGS"

"It was in the early 1870's that the metropolitan interests of Curmnings, SC , came alive with the blowing of the first train and sawmill whistles. The railroad company furnished the train whistle and the late Mr. C. C. Cummings brought enterprise; the lumber manufacturing, the sawmill whistle, and gave the village it's name. About the same time, Mr. Robert Mixson, floated his sweetheart across the Savannah River on a raft to escape the consequences of in-law displeasure, married in SC and settled at Cummings, SC and set about the task of replenishing the earth with twenty-five (25) children. While Mr. C. C. Cummings gave the village it's name, Mr. Robert Mixson made the place perpetual by furnishing the people."

(Family history states that Robert Mixson married three times. The Savannah River separated the states of South Carolina and Georgia. His sweetheart above referred to was only about 12 years old and Georgia officials would not perform the ceremony. He rushed her across the river to South Carolina where they married).
