FROM: The Ocilla, Star, Thursday, May 7, 1970 (Some excerpts)

"Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 4, 30 O'clock at Brushy Creek Primitive Baptist Church for Warren R. Mixon, lifelong resident of Ocilla who died at his home on Ash Street Saturday following a brief illness. He was 76 years old.

"Col. Mixon, an esteemed Ocilla attorney, was born in Irwin County, October 6, 1893, the son of the late John L. and Nancy J. Mims Mixon.  He was noted for the contributions of time and ability to his community and served Ocilla and Irwin County in many capacities. He was representative to the State Legislature for two terms (1931-1935), served as Chairman of the Board of Education in Ocilla for a number of years, and served as president of the Irwin County Chamber of Commerce. The leadership provided by Mr. Mixon while he served as chairman of the board of Education has been cited as one of the leading factors in the creation of a good educational system in OcilLA

"Educated in the public schools of Irwin County, the deceased received his LLB degree in 1917 from the University of Georgia School of Law and had practiced law in Irwin County since that time. He was a charter member of X Lambda Chi Alpha at the University of Georgia and was a former member of the board of Governors of the Georgia Bar.

"In December of 1961, the Ocilla Lions Club publicly recognized Col. Mixon for "his great service to Ocilla and Irwin County." In a tribute accompanying the plaque presented to the attorney, the Lions Club wrote: "he was richly endowed by nature with her greatest gifts- extraordinary personality, a compassionate heart, a disciplined mind, a penetrating wit, a perseverance that reckoned not with difficulties, and an immense capacity for work- few men have ever unfolded their gifts more unselfishly or more effectively for his community."

"The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Sutton Mixon of Ocilla; a son Harry Mixon of Ocilla; three daughters, Mrs. David Mathis of Ocilla, Mrs. Robert T. Hurt and Mrs. James Matthews, Jr. of Cordele; and a brother, Columbus C. Mixon of Belleview, FLA"
