Experience G. Mixson, dau. of John C. and Elizabeth Joyce Mixson, was b. ca. 1815, d. ca. 1841, m. (1) Benjamin, E. Brown, b. 1791, d. 1832, m. (2) abt. 1836 to John J. Fogler.

 

The youngest daughter, Experience, married Benjamin E. Brown who, in his will dated April 10, 1827 (admitted to probate court Nov 5, 1832), leaves “to my wife Experience G. Brown” most of his estate including the land and house. Of his estate not going to Experience, he specified that his sister Cynthia Calhoun only get ten dollars with the remainder divide between his three brothers Michael Brown, Barnet H. Brown, and Jabez G. Brown. Experience’s father, John J Mixson along with Barnet Brown were specified to be executors of his will. Benjamin Brown had a fourth brother he did not list, Josiah E Brown who had married Experience’s older sister Susan Elizabeth Mixson (see #710 above).

 

Being the youngest of John and Mary’s children, she was very young when she married. Her birth date is unknown but several sources[1] say it was about 1815 which means she would have been 12 years old when she married Benjamin Brown. The 1830 and 1840 census did not list names of children so it likely she was older. Unfortunately, the marriage was a short-lived for Benjamin died in 1832.

•  Benjamin B Brown and Charles H Colding in land dispute with Jabez G. Brown on April 4, 1828 and court orders plat of land made and be presented at next court.
•  Court settlement of Bartlet Brown’s estate: LINK  “Benjamin B. Brown died in 1832, without issue, leaving a wife surviving him, and a will, duly executed, dated April 10, 1827, whereby he directed his debts to be paid & and bequeathed to his wife Experience G. Brown “  “The property mentioned in the will is the same he got from Bartlett Browns (his father) estate”
•  Between the years 1830 & 1849, Jabez G. Brown became greatly embarrassed in his affairs , and judgements to a very large amount were obtained against him… ($37,806.10) … or two years & a half before February 4 1850, the Sheriff of Barnwell had advertised extensively in newspapers , sales day after sales day , that he would sell the property of Jabez . G. Brown to satisfy the executions against him…  Jabez G Brown died in April 1852

After Benjamin’s death, Experience married John James Folger before August of 1837 when in her father’s will with that date listed his daughter “Experience G Fogles (wife of John J)”. Also in her 1837 will, Mary Joyce Mixson lists John Fogler as Experience’s husband.

 

Experience was John Folger’s second wife, his first wife was “widow Owens”, (Mary Owens, d. March 21, 1836) thus Fogler’s Experience was the second widow he married. After Experience’s death Fogler m. (3) on January 13, 1842 Sarah Ann Johnston suggesting that Experience died in 1841.

 

In the book William Johnston, Of Isle Of Wight County, Virginia and His Descendants, 1648-1964, by Coy K. Johnston, says “Fogler acquired the Mixson Homestead and Plantation from his marriage to Experience. It was later known as “The Fogler Place,” and was near Bull Pond in Barnwell District not from above the Beaufort Smyrna Church (now in Allendale County).”

 

Rather than the “Mixson Homestead and Plantation” it was more likely it was Benjamin Brown’s estate since he bequeathed it to Experience while the Mixson homestead and plantation was not.

 

On December 22, 1836 William J. Mixson filed a petition with the court as Administration of John Mixson’s estate saying, “that a division cannot well take place without a sale thereof -- it is ordered that all the personal Estate of John Misson decd be sold on Monday the 16th day of Jany.”

 

Mary Mixson, Experience’s mother in her will dated August 21, 1837 stated:

I give, devise and bequeath all the Property & Estate (Real, Personal or otherwise) of which I am possessed or to which I may be entitled either in Law or Equity - whether my share in the Estate of my late husband (Jno. Mixon) or otherwise -- as follows: To my children, A. K. Mixon, James J. Mixon, Edward M. Mixon Charles J. Mixon, William J. Mixon, Susan Brown, Mary H. Darlington (wife of James Darlington) and Experience G. Fogler (wife of Jno J. Fogler) share & share alike, equally to be divided among them, in as full, complete & perfect manner as by law I am enabled to do.

Her fourth daughter Lavoice she only left $10 which she explained later was because, “inasmuch as the said Robert Kirkland [Lavoice’s husband] & his wife claim a greater share in the Estate of the said John Mixon than the other children have agreed to take”
