Simmons and Williams presented their recommendation for Tallahassee to be the site of the new government seat and on May 24th, 1824 the legislative council approved “An Act providing for a grant of land for the seat of government in the Territory of Florida, and for other purposes."  There was only one problem, where exactly was “Tallahassee”?  That is the story of Robert Butler, the first Surveyor General of Florida.
