Notes:

  •  This is the first time that Barbara calls her younger brother “Corky”.  Previously it was always “Freddie” so sometime this year he got the name Corky.  He carried the name Corky as he got older and that is what the family calls him to this day.

  • Corky is my uncle, he is five years older than me.

  • Scotty the dog barking I find interesting.  When I was in my teens, we spent a lot of time at Grandpa Junior’s farm which he called the Jr. Ranchette.  One year he got an all-white German Shepherd dog which was always barking.  After a few months Grandpa got rid of him. ·

  • Canasta is a card game that Barbara and Morris often played with their friends.  I remember many a night growing up that Barbara and Morris played Canasta with their lifelong friends Betty and Billy.  Morris loved playing cards and a few weeks before he died at the age of 93, he beat Corky and his wife and me at the game Texas Canasta.

Dearest darling,

How is my honey this awfull day?  Gosh, is it ever dreary!  I’ve only sold 1 bag of grapefruit, and it’s now 10:30.  Yesterday I sold quite a bit.      Mom, Sue & Jimmy just left for Ocala.  Sue & Jimmy went in their truck and mom went in our car.  Gosh I feel sorry for Sue.  Corky is bawling his head off.  He wanted to go with Sue and J. In the truck.  Daddy went yesterday, and he won’t be back until we call him about Sue. (Guess what?  The sun just came out!)  We had quite a storm about 5 o’clock last night.  (Dixie and Gary are fighting – or house sounds like a crazy house!)

Gosh, honey I wish you were here.  Maybe you could make Corky quite crying.  He’s driving me nuts!  (Just a min. Got a customer!)  Well it took ‘em long enough.  They looked at everything.

Guess what?  Sunday nite Scottie started barking after mom & dad got home and I bet he barked straight for an hour.  Mom, dad, and I did everything we could think of to shut him up, but to no avail.  About 2 o’clock the man next door came over and told us to “shut that dog up,” “That for night now he couldn’t sleep because of that dog barking.” That hond out doors was abarking too.  So dad got mad and took Scottie back from where we got him.  She won’t take him back though, but she said she would house break him for us.  I don’t see why someone don’t shoot him, and all the trouble would be over!!  Darn he made me made Sun. night; I bet I was awake for 3 hrs.

Darling, I gave mom some money to buy some Canasta.  You always forget yours, so I thought I’d just buy some.  (oopps, another customer!)

Well, darling I’ll close for now.  I still love you lots and lots.  Hurry Sat. up and I’ll see you in the afternoon, although I won’t look for until 7 o’clock!!  I love you, my darling , honey, sugar pie.

Your future wife,
Barbara
