Wilbur suffered mentally and physically from his time in World War I. In 1932 it got so bad he was hospitalized and being a veteran, went to the Naval hospital in Pensacola which is in the panhandle of Florida, some 350 miles from their home in Micanopy Florida. It was a rough time for the family with it being time for spring planting and without Wilbur the boys had to work extra hard on the farm. The boys could not go visit their father so they wrote letters to him. The letter meant a lot to Wilbur, alone in the hospital, far away from all his family in Micanopy. He saved the letter which lasts to this day.
