But in April things started to look better when on April 27th John received a letter from Mitzi saying that she was ”please to report that the needed pages were delivered to the bindery two weeks ago. I just called Mrs. Manney and she said they were working on them, but would not give me a definite date.” She also said in future correspondence to omit the “Inc.” from the company name. She also said she was enclosing a check for $12.00 on and advance copy of the Mixson book but John wrote on the letter “No check included.”[f16-d51]
On August 13th John received a letter from Travis Barnett saying they are having the pages printed and when completed, will take them to Mrs. Manney for binding. He says that they hope to have their own bindery equipment soon.[f16-d52]
On October 6th 1971 John received a letter from Mitzi saying,[f16-d53]
“The books owed you by American Reference Publishers, Inc. are now being reprinted by American Reference publishers, sole owners Mitzi and Travis Barnett. We wish to remind you that Mitzi and Travis Barnett, at the time your book was published, owned NO PART of American Reference Publishers, Inc. and had nothing to do with the management of said company. But, since Mitzi was associated with the company, working for a salary at the time, we felt a moral responsibility to fulfill all obligations of the old American Reference Publishers, Inc. Your book was only one of the many obligations that had to be filled. Legally, according to my lawyers, my accountant, my banker, I did not have to fill any of them, but morally we felt we had to fulfill all of them, and are happy to report that his has been done, or is int process of being done at the present.”
She goes on to say that they spent $1,350 as the “cost to us, with no reimbursement, of what fulfilling this obligation has been.” Evidently John wasn’t totally satisfied with the situation and Mitzi goes on to say “I certainly see your point in the matter, but I also know that I have done my best toward you, and feel that any hard feeling should be directed toward the previous management and not toward my husband and me who were victims just like you, and that we should not be held responsible for something over which he had no control.”
