Ralph Homes Mixson
Ralph Homes Mixson
enlisted in the Army on October 12, 1940 in Jacksonville Florida and
after training was sent to Bataan in the Pacific where he was captured
by the Japanese. Ralph, with many other prisoners were forced to
march for six days on what became know as the “Bataan
Death March”. Along with Ralph was J. T. McCullough who story was in
the Ocala newspaper in 1977. McCullough said:
When we surrendered in Bataan, the Japs marched us for six days on the ‘Death March’. We ended up at Camp O’Donnell, and in this camp we lost over 1,600 boys in 40 days. The Japs then moved us to Cabonatican. We lost 2,600 men here in eight months.
At Cabonatican, Mallad and Ralph were in the same ward with me in the hospital. We used to talk of home and our loved ones. I guess Lutie was you mother.
Ralph died July 7, 1942. This hurt Mallad very much. The Japs wouldn’t give us any medicine.
Yes, Mallad and Ralph made the Death March. The outwalked the Nips who were changing guards every five miles and many of them rode.
Mallard’s Dysentery got worse. I washed his body and clothes. He got worse and worse. Finally he died on Sept 10, 1942.
I was sorry to seem him die like this. Until today, I hate the Japanese very much and will always hate them.
Yes, the U.S. let us down. We were alerted against the Japs six months before the war. The brass let all of our planes get caught on the ground. All of our planes at Clark were destroyed and also at Marshall Field.
Ralph died in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija Province, Central Luzon, Philippines and is buried in the Cabanatuan Memorial Cemetery in Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines. There is a headstone for him in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, KY.
