Abraham Mixson #704

704 ABRAHAM MIXSON, JOHN MIXSON IV (6), JOHN MIXSON III (3), JOHN MIXSON II (2), JOHN MIXSON I (1)

Abraham Mixson - b. in SC ca. 1747, d. in Barnwell County, SC before 1820. He was a brother to John Mixson, Sr., of Barnwell County, according to Josiah Seth Mixson, who stated that his forefather, John Mixson, Sr., had several brothers, Abraham being mention as one of them.

Two Abraham Mixsons are shown in 1790 census of South Carolina, Orangeburg District, South Part, which included Barnwell County. The other is the son of Michael Mixon (see 3401).

The 1810 census of Barnwell lists Abraham Mixson with I male under age 10;2 males 45 and over;2 females under 10; and one female26-45, and it is stated by Josiah Seth that he was the patriarch of most of the Hampton County Mixsons.

Deed records of Barnwell County show that there was an Abraham Mixson, Sr., and another deed refers to Abraham Mixson, the younger. This might be construed as a father and son by the same name, or since Michael Mixson of Beaufort County had a son by name of Abraham Mixson - b. 1774, Abraham Mixson the younger might have had reference to him.

Abraham Mixon paid tax in 1819 in Marion County, Mississippi Territory. He is listed on the 1820 census of Marion County: 1 male over 45, 1 male 16-18, 1 male under 10, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 16-26, 2 females 10-16, and 3 females under 10. He moved into Lawrence County, Mississippi, in 1824 where he paid tax until 1842. He is shown on the Lawrence County census for 1830 and 1840, and on the 1850 census in Jackson County, Mississippi, and is on the tax list of Jackson County for 1844 and 1845, paying tax on 1 slave only. The 1846 tax list of Jackson County has a Joice Mixon and an Abram Mixon paying poll tax.
