In 1992 I was living in Reston Virginia
when I got thinking about my time as a Boy Scout as a kid and
decided I would like to work with the Boy Scouts as an adult Leader.
I looked up the local area Counsel and asked them about troops near
me and they suggested I contact Troop 1802 that met at Terraset
Elementary School. I contacted them and the Scout Master, Dennis
Ferrara, said to come to their next troop meeting which I did.
After meeting the leaders and boys, Dennis said they already had two
assistant scout masters but said they needed more Committee Members
which helped with planning and worked with the boys on merit badges.
As a Committee Member I helped with troop meetings, planning, scout
advancement, scout merit badges and the thing I enjoyed the most,
camping trips. In 1997 Mr. Ferrara’s two sons made Eagle Scout and
were done with Boy Scouts so he retired as Scout Master and the
troop needed a new Scout Master so the troop Committee asked to fill
the role which I accepted. After being Scout Master for a year I
found that I didn’t like the role as it took more effort that I was
willing to put into it and I was going though difficulties with my
marriage so I resigned.
The eight years I worked with Troop 1802 was a wonderful and
rewarding time which I met many fine boys, men and families.
