Subject: Re: Y2K or Y2Croc
Regarding Y2K, there were a few scattered glitches that I heard about,
one in an atomic plant in Japan and one here in the U.S. with some sort
of Air Force computer, plus some credit cards that stopped working in
London. I agree, however, that it was a "let down," but then I
suppose that's what we all wanted. I secretly suspect some people wanted
more "excitement" though.
I finished the 01-01-00 book, which involved a lot of Mayan mythology,
so when I went by the public library I picked up a few books on the
subject. I also got Ishmael, the book you listened to on tape.
It does have components of the movie Instinct in it. I've read
most of it by now. I'm enjoying it, but parts of it get a little
preachy sounding because of the format of mostly the gorilla talking or
lecturing. I'm curious how it will end. I worked New Years
Eve, but that night had planned to watch the Washington Millenium
celebration, which I did. I scanned all through the program
offerings and either that or the CNN around the world, which you
watched, sounded best. I found the featured Spielburg film interesting
because it was mostly a collage, and it was entertaining to see how much
I could recognize.
I'd like to see it again. For example, one segment started with the
giant robot from the Day the Earth Stood Still (one of my favorite
movies of all time), then had CP30 from Star Wars and some other robots.
I wondered if you might have gone to the celebration. In and around the
LONG commercials of the millenium celebration, and afterwards I watched
Y2Croc, a countdown with the
Crocodile Hunter. I really like his
show. I haven't been able to watch many lately, so I caught a lot
of new material I hadn't seen. He is absolutely insane the way he
gets face to face with animals. There was one segment where he
found a den of rattlesnakes, and he crawled right in. One of the
new shows I got to see was on the snakes of Africa, the Black Mamba,
Green Mamba and Puff Adder, etc. The countdown ended with a
"bloopers" movie of places where he DID either get bitten, slip, fall,
or trip, etc. I read a novel about Africa recently in which one of
the children was killed by a Green Mamba snake, so it was interesting to
see. Anyway, this morning, it dawned on me (I'm a little slow I
guess) that Y2Croc had a "double meaning" as in crock. Right at
midnight I did go outside and look up at Orion, my favorite
constellation, and caught just a glimmer of fireworks from nearby areas.
After a morbidly cold Christmas, the weather here also turned warm, 70's
and 80's. Saturday and Sunday it was warm enough to walk outside
so I skipped the mall, but started back this morning, not because of
cold, but because of the safety. My neighborhood is not too
unsafe, but its quite dark still that early. Did you make any
resolutions for the year?
What an accomplishment to get the headboard done. I bet that
really kept you busy. Did you design it out on paper first, or
just sort of wing it?
School starts back this week--too soon. A big glitch in my Sunday
morning as the bagel place was closed. It was a real let down.
There really is NO PLACE ELSE to go. I ended up at McDonalds--a
total mistake--greasy tables, greasy food, slovenly help, and the most
irritating environment possible, as all through my trying to read the
paper, their microwave kept sending out PIERCING alarms. I should
have gone back home. Elizabeth
