It would have been really neat to live in the canal house but they were
just too far away, over 1 1/2 hour drive. They also wanted a 10-20
year commitment, something I could see doing. So I didn't bother
to go look at them. House investment is usually one of the best
things you can do although I haven't faired so well. My first
house I made about a $10,00 profit on, my second didn't make any but
with the tax breaks over the years it probably was still a good choice.
My current townhouse, well it's hard to say. If I sold now I would
clear about $10-15K, Julie's father loaned us $5K so we would have to
pay him back. As part of the divorce I think I will take out a
second mortgage and give $15K to Julie and get to keep the house.
That would mean that if I sold in the next few years I would make
nothing (or even lose money). About the divorce, I had wanted it
to happen in January but just before Christmas Julie said she wanted to
wait till March so we are now planning for March. I just got a
do-it-yourself divorce book yesterday which I plan to read this weekend.
We are pretty much in agreement but need to work out some final things
and then get it all down on paper. AOL called me back last Friday
and said the interview went very well and they are interested but they
had two more persons they wanted to interview first and with the snow
last week the interviews were delayed until yesterday. I plan to
call this afternoon but don't expect to really get an answer until next
week.
