Movies, TV and Music

Several good movies came out in ’81, probably top on my list was Raiders of the Lost Ark with Harrison Ford.  I found On Golden Pond a very moving story about love and aging.  Twenty some years later I would make a model of the boat that was in the movie.  I found Time Bandits, which a boy follows a group of dwarfs though time, entertaining and fun. The new James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only with Roger Moore playing Bond was a disappointment.

There wasn’t much of anything new in ’81 on TV that I watched.  Dallas was the top rated TV show and everyone had been talking about it for several seasons but I never really got into it and probably never saw more than one or two episodes. Some shows I still watched regularly, M*A*S*H, Archie Bunker, Magnum P.I.  Reruns of Star Trek (the original) and Kung Fu were on and regularly watched them.

There was not much new music in ’81 that impressed me. "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes was the number one song for the year and I liked it well enough, but I had never heard of Kim Carnes other than for that one song.  Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” from the movie with the same name was popular but I soon got tired of “9 to 5” being stuck in my mind.  The Gibb brothers who made up the Bee Gees had broken up (two of which were twins that had the same birthday as me) which was fine with me after their Disco era I had pretty much given up on them.   Although released before ’81, there was several new bands and songs that Julie had introduced me that I liked including the band Boston and their “More Than a Feeling” and “Don’t Look Back” albums.
