A Place Called Reston

Sunset over Lake Audubon
Sunset over Lake Audubon as seen from our balcony.

By spring we had pretty much settled into the townhouse on Lake Audubon, work for both Julie and I at ICL was going well, Anne was living at home and going to George Mason. Living in and working in Reston was wonderful. Reston a suburb of Washington, DC, positioned west of the city in Virginia.  A “planned” community, Reston’s master plan was designed by Robert Simon to have planned, self-contained communities with residential and commercial spaces separated by green space filled with pathways and parks.  Having been in Reston now for two years, I began to appreciate Simon’s concept, living in a residential area, overlooking a lake, but yet five minutes from work in a commercial area separated by green space with pathways.  On nice days I would ride my bike down the pathway to work, a fifteen-minute ride.  On weekends I would often explore the pathways on my bike, seeing where they led to, finding myself in one neighborhood or another, sometimes not sure where I was but finding my way back home by another route.
