William Joyce Mixson

William Joyce was a prominent citizen of Barnwell County South Carolina serving in the House of Representatives in 1868 to 1870 representing Barnwell County.  In August William had an interesting encounter as stated in “The Daily Phoenix” August 4, 1868, when there was a fatal shooting of a white man. It was determined that about twenty rounds were fired and a “Mr. Dallas P. Smith, a peaceably disposed young man, employed in the post office, received a bullet wound under the left eye, from the effects of which he died-just twenty-four hours after receiving the wound.”  Before dying he told his mother that it was a black man that shot him. The altercation took place in front of a boarding house used by Colored members of the Legislature.  A person in the crowd said that the young man had attached the colored members of the Legislature.  Also staying at the same house was William J. Mixson (white) who had just been elected to the Legislature from Barnwell.  William reported that “after he had retired, he saw a number of persons in the street, near the house, and anticipated a difficulty. He immediately went into the privy, to get out of the way.  Soon after, he heard some words, and then pistol shots were fired.  When he returned from the privy, the boarding-house was empty.” The daily phoenix. [volume] (Columbia, S.C.), 09 May 1868. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. Lib. of Congress.
