It is said Mary Ann Stevens was very ill, but insisted she must visit her daughter, Sarah, Courtney, so a bed was placed on a wagon so Mary Ann could visit Sarah. Mr. Elbert Courtney said he was about four or five years old when his grandmother came to their house. One day he was sent to get his father from the field, and when he returned with his father, his grandmother was dead. The eldest child Elizabeth Stevens was running one hot day when she was about twelve years old she came to a spring and went in to cool off; the water was very cold and she was unable to walk from that day on. Mrs. Oscar Courtney said she was told, Elizabeth was a cripple, and would get around by sitting in a straight chair and moving it to where she wanted to go, and wore the legs of one chair down to the bottom rungs. She was persevering.
