Mary m. (2) to Joseph F. Newbill, b. Mar 30, 1848, d. 1910, bur. Fort Phantom Hill Cemetery, Phantom Hill, Jones County, TX.

Mr. Chapman [story] is kind of tragic. He was accused, tried and Convicted of Murder. He divorced Mary Ellen, because he did not want to be in prison for life, and her and their children to be destitute. It is tragic, in the fact, he was innocent, and many years later he was cleared and released. He remarried and had another family. While my grandmother was in the Oddfellow’s home, she had step siblings that were Chapman, Step siblings that were Newbill, and Newbill siblings. So the Chapmans and Newbill children had a difficult time. However, Mary Ellen managed to keep all of her children together with her.
