Caroline Elizabeth Mixson, dau. of Edward M. Mixson and Sarah Best Mixon, was b. April 25, 1842, d. May 1, 1892 at Gainesville, FL She was b. in Barnwell County, SC, m. John W. Riggs, , b. Oct 17, 1831 in Connecticut, d. Jan 26, 1902, John served in the Civil War Florida's 4th Regiment. Was released from Prison- Camp Chase Ohio in 14 May 1865. See web link to FL Memory Project for pension application. Imprisoned under harsh conditions. According to Ann Mathews, he was a man that never touched a piece of meat without a knife and fork before the war. During the imprisonment, he survived by eating rats.  Both bur.
