For two summers,
1965 and 1966, my brother and I went to Boy Scout camp at
Camp Echockotee. Mom and Dad dropped us off and we
were
assigned
a tent that had a wooden floor. I had a great time with
there being all sorts of activities you could do, swimming,
canoeing, wood working, archery and so on. I liked the
woodworking
and made a wooden bowl which I still have. I also took basket
weaving and got my Basket Weaving merit badge. In
leather making I made a leather badge which you stampped different
things on to a circle of leather.
I really enjoyed
canoeing and really learned how to handle a canoe. My second summer
I got a bit more serious and earned the Swimming merit badge which
took a lot of work including a mile swim. But mostly we had a lot
of fun. One thing I will always remember was my brother David
entered the critter race. He spotted a giant skink which he caught
the day of the race. Come race time he put it in the middle of the
ring and it was so fast it was out before any other boy’s critters
hardly moved.
I made Tenderfoot class and then completed the Second Class requirements
but never completed the First Class requirements before quitting Boy
Scouts.
