As you may or may not recall my mother was from England. She had a
sister or possibly half sister in England. I used to write to her
children, my cousins, when I was younger. They would send me these very
neat English comic books, which were very much more sophisticated than
ours. In turn I would send her pictures of American rock and roll stars,
etc. Anyway, Jean, to whom I used to write, moved to Australia. I lost
touch. Of course, she has grown children now herself. I have a letter
somewhere with all the details. Actually I have a copy. My sister wrote
to her when she found out mother had AZ, to get the family history. My
sister wasn't even going to give me a copy. She just "mentioned" she had
it when she was making her delivery to me of my childhood stuff. I told
her to get it so I could get a copy. Just now I forget where they live,
possibly Sydney.
The Crocodile Hunter comes on Mondays and Saturdays at 9:00 p.m. and
midnight ET. I haven't seen it all this term. One of the episodes was
about the "dingo" fence. That's a very long fence across miles and miles
of Australia to keep the wild dogs out of the sheep herds. Unfortunately
the fence is lethal to wildlife who run into it and die. This "Crocodile
Hunter" is actually an environmentalist. He rescues crocs which impinge
on human territory. It was fearful to watch. He showed how a person
could unsuspectingly wander along side a creek where a croc is, and the
croc will suddenly leap out on the bank and grap it's next meal. It is
all lightning fast. Alligators are totally different in terms of their
behavior. Crocs are apparently very aggressive. Anyway, this man is
totally bizarre. There is a little bit of staging in the show, but not
much. Once he went on a snake hunt and he got eyeball to eyeball with
these most deadly snakes.
The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, was making a film in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef on September 4th, 2006 when a stingray tale pierced his chest killing him within minutes.
