Subject: Two Messages
I got both of your messages, just for your information that the system
didn't screw up with your mail to me. I had asked for Monday off
because I had developed a line up of things to do. It started off
slightly negatively though as when I got to the bookstore at 8:00 a.m.
they had sold out of the book I needed for this Thurs. class. The
book won't be in until Wed., but I can't make it to the bookstore by 5
when they close. They are open Thurs. eve. so I will get it before
class, but not in time to study. I kicked myself because I could
have called and have them hold a copy for me, which they will now do,
but I never dreamed they would run out. I next went on to the Art
Lecture series I had registered for, going to the morning session
because I can't go on Mon. nights anymore. It was a lecture I
particularly wanted to hear. Basically it was about these major
exhibitions which were held in the U.S. which were so influential.
I have heard about them many, many times, but wasn't quite sure what
they were--the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago and the Armory show.
The lecture was very interesting because, for example, at the Armory
show, a lot of European works were brought to N.Y. for a first time
showing to Americans. Nude Descending a Staircase, a really
abstract painting was shown, and it was quite controversial. It
was a Cubist work. For the Chicago Fair an entire city was built in
Chicago. When the lecture broke up, one of the attendees turned out to
be from Chicago and she and another man and I started talking about
Chicago. I was able to ask her when a good, or the best time to go
back was, because I really liked Chicago. I had thought about going back
this year as Montgomery just started a direct flight there (our airline
connections are the pits here and usually people have to drive to
Atlanta to B'ham to get good fares and connections.) It turned out the
man visits a lot and I remembered him because he came to the library to
xerox something on an opera one time when he was going to Chicago.
After the lecture I did piss ant errands, then came home and walked.
The weather was so beautiful. I actually felt a little strange
being out during the day running errands. Its something I hardly
ever do and it made me wonder why/how so many people have such free time
during the day. Mostly for over a year what I've done is go from apt. to
work to apt. to law school and back to the apt.
The art lecture was full of extremely well dressed and well groomed
women and when I ran errands there were so many men out and about.
After walking I went to see A Civil Action which was a major part of the
day's plan. I really enjoyed it, but the book was richer in some
ways, although the movie was more dramatic--the book was somewhat dry
and lawyerly in parts. The theatre had only about 10 people in it, which
I like--I don't like large theatre crowds. I was spoiled at the
public library by my day off during the week and so could go to the
films at quiet times. Well, we got no snow at all, and I imagine
we won't now, although I'm trying to remember what time of year it was
when it snowed last. I liked Sleepless in Seattle and also thought
I would enjoy You've Got Mail, but, simply because of time now, I really
have to pick and choose in what I go see. I'm afraid it will get
relegated to video, along with Enemy of the State. Otherwise, I
feel good, but freaked out this weekend as I simply could not get
through my work. I didn't get to go see PI, and my only time to do
it now would be tonight. I'll have to debate that. I don't
like going weekdays because shows start at 8, which means I get home
late. Weekends there is a 7 show. BUT, I just was plowing,
plowing through work and at about 2 on Sunday realized it was unfeasible
for me to go. I would have had to tape X-files to go anyway and
also the Practice, so my treat was to watch them instead.
Well, I keep dreaming about going back to Chicago. I think you'd
really like it as well. The F. L. Wright homes, the art museums,
and the lake is something else--its almost like being on the beach.
Well I'm writing because my telnet connection is screwed up (my computer
always gets
screwed up when I am away) and I can't do my work. Elizabeth
