Subject: Blahs But Better
Friday I woke up and decided when I did that I really needed the day
off. I like to plan when I am going to be off, so that things are
in order in the library, but I called anyway and told my boss things
were slow and I could use the day off. Actually I told his voice
mail. We don't get "sick" days here until the third day, but I
have lots of Paid Time Off built up.
Thanks for the details about your laptop and computer hook-ups.
When I watch t.v. I see things like people hooking up to the internet
while sitting in traffic jams, and I always wonder about the mechanics
of it. I'd LOVE a laptop. Does this mean though that you
don't get to keep it? Can you take it home with you or on the
weekends? With our law grades this time we got a note from the Dean that
we were a "Christian" university and that we weren't supposed to be
looking up unsuitable (pornographic) sites on the internet.
Apparently someone or some students had pulled up some stuff. He
mentioned that there was a "log" which makes me wonder about a "log"
from my work computer--all the stuff I look up (but never porn and I
even avoid anything feminist because sometimes that gives unexpected
results). One reason for my day off was I just had to somehow get my
apartment in order. If you recall I trashed my futon, and was
using my couch cushions for a bed. That was actually very
comfortable, but then it meant my living room was torn up--no couch
cushions. Also, I had boxes and boxes of papers in every room that
SOMEDAY I need to go through and file or trash. They were
cluttering every room. SO, I decided to use my sofa bed in the
living room as a bed and just use my small original bedroom for a
dumping ground for now. (I couldn't move the couch into the bedroom as
it is SO heavy and when I had it moved the mover had to remove the legs
to get it in the front door.) I spent Friday shoring up the sofa
bed with some 2 x 4's I had scavenged and some old bookshelf boards
because the springs were stretched and the bed was very uncomfortable as
a consequence. The final product turned out well. I am just
going to leave the bed unfolded and during the day I have a pretty quilt
to put over it. It may look sort of "dumb" to have my whole living
room devoted to the bed, but I don't use it for a living room per se
anyway.
Living with the arrangement on the weekend, it worked fine. I just
don't want to buy anything right now for this apartment, because if/when
I move, most of it is going to Salvation Army. Had I known the
couch had such a lousy bed, I never would have moved it to begin with--I
always thought it would be a nice backup bed for visitors. Anyway,
domestic stuff--but I couldn't function with all the studying I have to
do and have my "home" an irritant. Sunday I did
finally get out and go to the Episcopal Church as
they were doing a service with Shakespeare actors, reading from sermons
and prayers from England in the 16th century. One problem with me
is that I have started hating coming to work, mostly because it has been
so slow the past few weeks. When it is slow, all I want to do is
"get out" and I start feeling trapped, as I'd really rather go study my
law books. Fortunately this morning I've had some business, in
fact I have a project I have to work on now, "magnetic fields" and
"astronauts" and "effects on bone density."
