Subject: Laptop
I thought I would get a note off this morning before the day and week
get too busy. You asked about laptops, I got a Micron 366 Mhz, 14"
display, 128MB, 6GB hard disk, CD ROM, modem and network card, it's a
great system. I didn't have much choice as I didn't actually buy
it. For the ATF contract they tacked on some pork barrel items
including 8 laptops. As it turned out they said one was for me for
use on the contract, I wasn't' going to turn it down. For office
use I plug it directly into the building network. For remote use
and from the hotel I use the modem and plug it into the phone line.
Most hotels these days have a phone jack either on the phone or wall
just for computer use. I use CompuServe as my personal, home
Internet provider so I just looked up a local phone number in Denver and
dialed it. This allows me to access our company's internal
intranet and mail from remote. You can get a special connector to
connect to a cell phone but it tends not to be too reliable. Bill
Gates is putting up a satellite network which would provide wireless
internet connections anywhere in the world but it won't be available for
a couple of more years. We have a technical review for the
potential U.S. Courts project this afternoon. I spent half the
weekend studying the requirements and object oriented design. We
(I) would be doing the design for the Pre-Trial Services, Probation Case
Plan, Pre-Trial Services Case Plan and Substance Abuse modules.
Although it would be an interesting project I don't look forward to it
for it would take 3hrs out of my day for the commute. Getting a
housekeeper was one of the best things Julie and I did. The maid
only comes every other week but that’s enough to make a big difference.
Well to work. Larry.
