Subject: Canal houses
Well I got the high speed cable internet service and It's Great!
It's nice to be able to just access the net anytime without having to
wait for a dial in and the speed is super. I also got the information on
the canal houses. It would be interesting but I don't think it
will work out. The houses are historic houses, over a 100 years
old, in the C&O Canal National Park. The packets I got are actually
"Request for Proposal" to rent the houses. The houses need various
work and your proposal is supposed to address the work and how you would
use the house. The houses rent for $875 a month which is
unbelievable. They are expecting proposals for 10-20 year leases.
The houses themselves are old stone houses, fireplaces in every room,
4-5 bed rooms. One of the houses has radiator heat, the other
house they don't say so it might only have the fireplaces for heat.
They are really too far for me to live, it would be about a 2hr commute
one way. I may go see them when they have the open house but I
don't plan to go for one.

One of the canal houses. Lock in forground. Cyclists are from my 1997 C&O Canal bike ride
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, or C&O Canal, runs along the north side of The Potomac River starting at George Town in Washington, DC and terminating at Cumberland, Maryland. There are 74 canal locks on the canal to lift and lower barges in the change of the river elevation. Each lock had a stone house for the lock keeper to live in. A few of the lock houses still remain and the park service leases them out to individuals with the requirements they maintain the building. See my story about biking the 160 mile length of the C&O Canal in 1997.
