Yipes, that's steep, splitting your retirement. It doesn't seem as
if it would be mandatory though, as she filed for divorce, so I assume
you are choosing to do it, although some plans make it mandatory.
I've put away 10K+ in retirement since I've been here, but I've kept it
in the fixed account plus, so I haven't seen any of the stock increases.
Then I have about the same amount in several scattered IRAs or rollover
accounts. I am thinking more and more that the "secret" to retiring is
to have a paid for "place." That would drastically cut bills. That
is what has come to worry me the most. I think I will need to make
a car decision at some near point, but I want some other things in place
first. Right now school is top money priority. I was
thinking the other night that IF I did stay here, which may be best, I
could finish the J.D., make sure I pass the bar, POSSIBLY once tuition
bills are over, move into a small house or garden home (very popular
here), then cut back my hours here so I could link up with some law
office part time. BUT--when I think about that, I think Do I want
to stay here.
Not really. There are some gorgeous areas of Montgomery, that Blue
Ridge area I told you about. If I could escalate my income, I
could move out there and possibly be "happy." My income will
DEFINITELY NOT escalate here, not at less than 5% raise per year. If I
took drives frequently to Atlanta or Birmingham, which so many people do
here, I might also be happier. Many people here think NOTHING of
hopping in the car to Atlanta. In fact, the VERY reason so many people
love Montgomery, and they do, is they call it THE HUB CITY.
Atlanta, Birmingham, the beach, New Orleans, Memphis--half a day's drive
or less. Some weekends the city is deserted (except for me!).
Is that movie starting already. I thought it was not until summer.

I must have told Elizabeth that part of the settlement was to split any retirement funds that Julie and I had.
