Birth of the Internet

On January 1st, 1983, the Internet was born when ARPANET and the Defense Data Network officially changed to the TCP/IP standard.  Prior to this time, various networks existed but had no common way to communicate with each other. The new communications protocol called Transfer Control Protocol/ Internetwork Protocol or just TCP/IP allowed for the systems to talk to each other. Initially TCP/IP was only used with government and military networks but in the next few years would spread to universities and then on to commercial companies.    Little did I know how this would change the world.

Rosalie’s Diary
January 9, 1983

Well, both of my dear oldest children are gone. We buried Dotty Thurs. I am so glad that Rosie was with her and that they go to visit her sisters in N.C. I know she was happy about that. Today is cloudy and dreary. I have been up since 6:00 o'clock. I made chicken & rice and potato salad to take to the church and I have a cake.

Dotty, Dad’s older brother Adrian’s wife, died on January 4th and was buried next to Adrian#916 in the Flemington Baptist Church Cemetery.

Also in January my sister Beth, her husband and son moved back to Florida from Washington state where they had been living.  They at first stayed with Mom and Dad then they rented a house in Jacksonville where Mark dived for oysters and clams to sell.
