1990 Feaster-Mixson Reunion
At the Feaster homestead under the Old Oak Tree
At the end of May I flew down to Florida for the Memorial Day holiday and the annual Feaster-Mixson family reunion. The reunion had been held every year since 1937 under the old oak tree at the old Feaster farmstead in Shiloh. The Feaster family were first intertwined with the Mixson family when my grandfather, Wilbur Mixson’s, older sister Mary Talula Mixson married Jacob Wesley Feaster. Grandma Mixson had been going just about every year since 1937 and since she didn’t drive, Mom, Dad and I stopped by and picked her up at her house in Orange Lake before going to the reunion. There was a good turnout, over fifty people, all related to the Feaster and Mixson families. It had been ten or more years since I had been to one so it was nice to see relatives that I hadn’t seen for some time.
Dinner is on the table
Such reunions would not be complete without food and this time was no exception with everyone bringing covered dishes for dinner. The food table, made from sawhorses with plywood on top and covered with tablecloths, was forty feet long and was completely covered with the best southern home style cooking. The desert section was alone ten feet long making it hard to choose between the pies, cakes and cookies, by why choose when you could a little bit of each. I was comfortably stuffed and ready for a nap by the time it was over.
