The troop at the Fall Camporee
Alan Day on right
In September with the start of the new school year I became the Scout Master for the Boy Scout troop 1802. I didn’t really want the position, I was quite satisfied being on the scout committee, but the previous Scout Master, Dennis had stepped down since both his sons had graduated from high school and thus finished with scouts. (Both his sons made Eagle Scout rank.) Dennis was a really great Scout Master, a lawyer by profession, he was logical, calm, knowledgeable and a great leader for the boys. With him stepping down, I thought the Assistant Scoutmaster Alan Day would step up to Scout Master as he still had a son in scouts, but Alan called me in August and asked me if I would be the Scout Master, giving some reason why he could do it at the time. I was very hesitant to accept, but in the end, I agreed to do it but for only one year.
One scout I remember in particular was Tim Susco. Tim was one of the older scouts and was well on his way to achieving Eagle Rank. Tim had all the attributes of the ideal Boy Scout, trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Well, that may be a bit much, but he was a wonderful boy. Tim and I seem to have a special connection and I helped him when I could on his tasks for Eagle Scout.
