His son Asbury Mixon "was born 12 miles south of Covington, Newton County, in 1824," so it is possible that they were living in Newton County and for some reason, probably because of the condition of the roads, they found it more convenient to use the Monticello post office until 1828. Jesse Mixon, son of Zedekiah and Mary Mixon, was b. in Beaufort County, NC, about 1797, d. in June, 1837, m. Cecilia ca. 1828.
In one of his letters he had written to his brother, Elijah Mixon, at Oxford, Go. (Jan 27, 1836), he said he then had five in the family - probably meaning he had three children. Later information indicates he had lost all but one of his children. Mr. Mixon was appointed a justice for Beaufort County in 1827, which place he held until his death. Court records show he served on the jury for a number of times, and was administrator of one or more estates. He has not been found in any census of Beaufort County.

John Mixon, son of James and Polly Mixon, was b. in Beaufort County, NC, ca. 1798, date and place of death unknown. Two John Mixons are shown in the 1830 census of Beaufort, one is John, the son of James, the other is John, the son of John and Mary Mixon. John, the son of James and Polly, it appears, had married about 1816 and had two small children in the 1820-census. Another census shows him with several children, but one of the old letters already referred to states he had lost all but three of his children. A later census indicates these children with him and are the survivors: Children:
