Green Mixon, son of Irvin and Martha Sirmon Mixon, was born in, Conecuh County, AL, 1844, died in prison camp at Elmira, New York, Apr 11, 1865. He was a member of Company "A", 1st AL Artillery stationed at Fort Morgan, Mobile, AL, and quoting from Brewer's History of AL (page 695), "The battalion attained a high degree of discipline. The federal General Granger pronounced it the most perfect body of either army. During the terrific bombardment (August 1864) the battalion handled the guns till they all were knocked out, losing 150 killed and wounded of about 500 engaged. The men were taken to Elmira, N. Y., where fully half died of smallpox”.

 

Green Mixon’s name was not in the card index file of Confederate Soldiers in the State Library at Montgomery.

NOTE: MILITARY SERVICE RECORDS show Green Mixon enlisted at Fort Morgan, Apr 13, 1864, captured August 23, 1864, and sent from New Orleans, LA, to New York, Sep 18, 1864, received at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor, Sep 28, 1864, transferred from there to prison camp at Elmira, N. Y. (date not shown), and died there Apr 11, 1865. Cause of death listed as chronic dysentery, or chronic diarrhea. Grave #2664.

Enlistment papers do not show his age or his home address.

 

(Since compiling above information, a letter from Nelson Irvin Mixon (age 80) of Shafter, California, a nephew to Green Mixon, dated Apr 24, 1972, who had been recently informed of the above military records, says “Yes, this information does match up with that that my mother had told me, except for one thing, that is, he died of pneumonia, and was in the prison camp at Elmira, NY).

Listed with his parents in the 1860 census, Conecuh County, AL., and with his mother in the 1870 and the 1880 censuses of Caldwell Parish LA, his father having died before 1870. On Oct 28, 1874 he m. in LA, Susan Emma Morgan, b. Jan 31, 1855 in Talladega County, AL, died at Phoenix, AR, Dec 16, 1937. Both bur. Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, Phoenix, Maricopa County, AZ.
