Saturday, August 1, 1959

Morris got up early & painted some & then went to work for Daddy. I washed & cleaned house. We went to Key’s house tonight for a hamburger fry for Morris’s S.S. class. There were 7 or 8 couples & their children there & we all had a real good time. Go home about 9:45.

Sunday, August 2, 1959

Brenda & I went to S.S. & church for we couldn’t get the boys out of bed. Cooked dinner & then we all took a nap. Morris worked in the yard off & on all day & it sure looks good with our newly painted house!

Just 2 more days til I leave for Ridgecrest. And what a lot of work to do to get ready.

Tuesday, August 4, 1959

Got everything ready & took the kids out to Mixsons to stay while I’m gone. Morris is going out there after work. Brenda cried at the last minute & didn’t want me to go, and I also feel like staying at home. But I have deserved this trip. The first time since I’ve been married I left both kids & Morris.

Wednesday, August 5, 1959

Up at 3:30 this morning & I might as well stayed up all night as I couldn’t sleep. Excited I guess! Margaret Le Perl, Jerry Norwood her son Buddy, Audrey Howell & I are riding together in Audrey’s car. Arrived at Ridgecrest at 5:30 this afternoon after a real nice trip. The mountains are beautiful & the cabin isn’t bad  Our family would return to Black Mountain several times in the following years for summer vacation and stay in the same cabin. .

Wednesday, August 12, 1959

Left Ridgecrest at 12 o’clock noon. Jerry, Buddy, Margaret, Audrey & I. Had a wonderful trip. Got to Wrightsville Ga. (Margaret’s home town) & spent the night at Margaret’s mother’s & aunt’s who have a large old house. What a nice bed after those beds at the cabin. Going to get up at 6 in the morning.

Well we got home at 12 o’clock noon. The kids were so glad to see me & Me them! And my dear darling. It surely pays to go away for a while. Worked all afternoon un-packing suitcases & washing.

Went to S.S & church. I gave the devotional in our opening session this morning. Everyone said it was good. Talked on Ridgecrest. We all took a nap this afternoon & drove over to see Mom & Dad. Talked more about Ridgecrest again to Mom & Dad.

Monday, August 17, 1959

Boy, I washed & ironed & cleaned house today! I worked like a nigger all day , and I’m dead tired tonight. Wet to bed early. Sue & Danny got here this morning from St. Pete. They’re going to spend 2 weeks until they go to Cocoa where Jimmy is being transferred to the new store.

Had a circle meeting at the church this morning & didn’t get home until noon.

Wednesday, August 19, 1959

Took Brenda to the hospital this morning to have her cast off and that stupid nigger cut her arm with the electric saw. Was in that hospital 2 hrs. & 20 min. Took a long nap this afternoon.

Thursday, August 20, 1959

Cleaned house good today & did all the washing up.  Went over and ate supper with Mom & Dad as Sue and Danny were there. Got home about 10 o’clock.

Friday, August 21, 1959

Betty met me up town & I bought Larry some new short pants for school & put blue jeans on lay-a-way. We bought groceries & then came home & ate lunch. She left about 3:30. Then we went to Audrey Howell’s house for Bar B Q chicken supper. All the girls home from Ridgecrest & their families were there. What a swell time we had!

Saturday, August 22, 1959

Betty, Billy, kids & us went to Jacksonville early this morning. Bought our English Ford and then went out to the zoo. Really had a nice time but we were all so tired. Got home about 5 o’clock. We ate lunch at the Burger King & the kids really enjoyed all of it.

Sunday, August  23, 1959

Went to S.S & then over to hear Daddy preach. Sue came home with us for dinner. We fixed a nice dinner seeing it was my darling’s birthday. Mom, Dad and I gave him a watch. Went out to Mixsons this afternoon to show the new car off. Saw Charlie & Emily while we were out there.

Monday, August 24, 1959

Went out to Swan Lake today to stay for the week. Carol & her 2 children got here from Atlanta. Flew in on a plane. The baby is just darling.  The baby was Vandy bon on December 4th, 1958. She looks like Corky did he was a boy.

Tuesday, August  25, 1959

Well 13 people in one cabin is a mess. David had to sleep with us & what a nights sleep. The water is really nice tho. Carol learned to water ski. Sue tried it but couldn’t make it. Morris came out about 2 o’clock today. He & Carol skied all afternoon. We played canasta tonight.

Wednesday, August 26, 1959

Boy, what a tan the kids & I are getting! Morris stayed today. Nita & Rich (Mom & Dad’s friends came for supper.) Sure liked them. They left about 10.

Thursday, August  27, 1959

Just loafed all day swimming. The kids are all getting along pretty good. Corky & Danny fuss & fight quite a bit. Danah loves the water & so does Vandy. None of us have been sleeping good. Carol, Sue, Morris & I played a good game of canasta tonight.

Friday, August  28, 1959

Got home from the lake today. The grass is all dried up & is it every hot. At least it rained tonight after I watered all day.

Saturday, August  29, 1959

Washed, cleaned house & let the kids go to the show with Corky & Danny. Mom, Sue, Carol and I went shopping at the shopping Center & bought groceries. Went to bed early. Rained again tonight.

Sunday, August  30, 1959

We all went to S.S. this morning & then came home & I fixed a real good dinner. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, fresh squash, green beans, & a jello salad. Had a real storm this afternoon.  Went by to see Adrian & Dotty for a few minutes & then went out to see Betty & Billy.

Monday, August 31, 1959

Had to take David to Kindergarden* this morning for a little get together to meet his teacher etc. Went to town & got Brenda a darling navy blue dress to wear to school tomorrow. Rained again today & I didn’t get all my clothes dried.

*Mom always said and spelled Kindergarten as “kindergarden”.
