Subject: Lullaby at Work
I just took a walk through parts of the hospital as I had to have some
way to cope with this "lull." On the one hand I don't want to
complain, as it's fine with me, but the conflict I experience is that
there are things I'd like to do, or need to do, which I can't because I
don't have time--except when I'm here when I can't do them. The
walk seemed to help. I may make it a routine. I made it into
a little bit of a workout by going down the stairs using mostly my arms,
by swinging from step to step, instead of putting stress on my knees.
There isn't much to see, a small gift shop and a hospital pharmacy shop,
but the walk felt invigorating.
Another interesting court fight here in Montgomery. This year the
state started requiring that students pass an EIGHTH grade exit exam
before they could graduate from High School. The students who did
not pass are not allowed to graduate, and consequently don't go to the
graduation ceremony. Well, a mother and a group brought suit
trying to get her daughter to be allowed to go through the graduation
ceremony with everyone else. The mother was interviewed on
television. She is appealing the ruling yesterday, that the
student's CAN't go to through graduation ceremonies. Apparently
her daughter has taken the test four times and failed all four times.
The mother's explanation was that something was "obviously wrong with
the test" the implied explanation being that the test is racial.
Alabama is already under a situation where it can't test its teachers
for qualifications because too many black teachers failed the test, and
they claimed the test was racially biased, and somehow it got blocked.
Is Alabama the cause of my possibly elevated BP? Would moving to
Utah be like going from the firing pan to the fire? At least the
Mormons eat right. Elizabeth
