Actually I did have a helmet on. I saw the picture rapid coming up
and took it off for that rapid and put it back on after. Yes that
is Julie in front of me. The guy with the helmet is a very
experienced white water canoeist I know from Bell Atlantic.
Actually we had 31 people, seven 4/5 person rafts, mostly from Bell
Atlantic (or significant others). They do it every year,
this was our second. Most people take the "guided" raft tours in
which they have guides in each boat or at least one in the boat in front
and the one in back. The tours also provide lunch. The problem
with the tours is that they typically have around 20 rafts and they all
gather before and after each rapid so it takes forever. We did a
"self guided" tour, i.e. we are our own guides and provide our own
lunches and transportation (from end back to beginning). Since
this group has been doing it for several years then it works out really
well (also cheaper, just $20 a person).
We really like the B&B but have had a real mixed experience. Some
really good and some not so good. We have gone to one in the
Shanendoa (I can never remember how to spell it!) Valley every year
(sometimes twice) for the past four years. The owners are really
special and we really enjoy their company. He was a National Park
Ranger until he retired. He worked at National parks all over the U.S.
with the last 10 years or so as the park superintendent at the Shanedoa
National Park. The one we stayed in last week we seldom saw the
owners, we had our own entrance to our room and didn't even go into
their part.
We usually use canned artichoke hearts.
Yes I have a bike rack that attaches to the trailer hitch, it's very
convenient. We often will go to local bike trails, C&O canal, Rock
Creek Park, etc. and take the bikes on the rack.
