The book is Digital Fortress by Dan Brown.  I thought of it just a minute ago.  I checked Amazon and there are some reviews.  I didn't read them too closely because sometimes they spoil the book.  Another reason I got interested in the book is that when I graduated from the Univ. of FL I interviewed with the NSA.  I had taken their test to be a cryptographer and scored really high and got an interview.  The main female character is a cryptographer with the NSA.  I didn't follow through with applying to work there though, and wonder where I would be now had I done so. 
 
Also, do you remember the Bent Card in G'ville.  It had computer cards plastered all over the walls.  It was a coffee shop.  EJ
