Subject: Weekend and Christmas
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was OK. Saturday started with
a yoga class. I missed this past Wednesday's class do to being to
stuffed from the late afternoon Christmas work lunch. This was the
last week of classes so I did the Saturday morning class for makeup.
It was a good way to start the weekend. Saturday night was the
company Christmas party at the Ritz, over 500 people, it was interesting
but really too big of a crowd and to feed that many the food was barely
warm. Still had fun. Sunday we did a brunch for Anne's
birthday but otherwise just did things around the house. Wednesday
we are going out to the Outback restaurant for my birthday. I've
never been there and thought I would like to try it. I thought
about going to Gainesville for the holiday but decided it was too long
of a drive and didn't want to spend the money on air fare. I also
just wanted some time off which I didn't have spend traveling and around
a bunch of the family. Sometimes it is good to just have a week
with no plans.
I got my review back last Thursday and it was really mixed and only got
a "Standard" rating. They did say some good things in the positive
section but the "Weakness and ways to improve performance" section was
not really good. I was really pissed off at most of the things
they said. They really harped about the cost/schedule and that I
didn't know how to manage them and need much improvement in this area.
What really pissed me off is that it was not my job as I was hired as a
"Senior member of the technical staff" not as a project manager.
My boss was the project manager and it was his responsibility to monitor
and manage the costs. I was never provided with cost information.
This all came about because the project costed more that they had
planned, they only made a 11% profit instead of their usual 18% profit.
Anyway I wrote a whole page response to their criticisms. I don't
actually believe it was my immediate boss who said the things on my
review because when I asked him about it he said it was a joint effort.
After I gave him my comments he later came by on his way home and said
the completely agreed with my comments and if it was OK with me he want
to use some of the things I said on his own review. He said that
he got some of the same things on his review. Seems to be a case
of "shit flows downhill".
Oh well this week will be really slow and I'll be off next week.
