Subject: Ice and Holiday
Yes we had Monday off. This is the first job that I've had that
gives Martin's day off. Since many of the contracts the company
has is with the federal government a lot of employees can't work on MLK
day so they give everyone off. Actually the "holiday" started last
Friday with the ice storm. The storm was quite bad. It was
supposed to change to rain by mid morning but stayed as freezing rain
and sleet all day. Everything was coated with ice. It looked
like one of the winter scenes from Dr. Zhivago. With the ice coating
the power lines and trees which then fall on the power lines much of the
area was without power, some still even yet today. Fortunately I
didn't lose power except for a few moments here and there. I did
come into work Friday morning only to find our building was without
power. I walked up three flights of stairs in total darkness to
find a half dozen people here. I stayed for about a half hour then
went home taking some papers with me so I could claim to be "working" at
home.
To catch up:
No I have not seen Dead Man Walking, I heard it was quite good but
haven't made it. The drive from Melbourne to UCF was just about one
hour one way. It was a pretty easy drive on those long strait roads,
e.g. the Bee Line Expressway.[1] That
was really crazy for your neighbor to have such a loud alarm and be able
to sleep through it. I usually say "we" when it is something that Julie
and I do together. No change with Julie, we still see each other three
or four nights a week. I believe it will all work out but will likely
take six or more months. There have been some good things about it for
being apart has allowed each of us to re-examine the relationship for
what we like and dislike about it. I believe in the end it will have
been a good thing. I really liked the X files, not only because the bit
about the nano technology but because it got back to the conspiracy
stuff. Well back to work. Larry
[1] I drove twice a week from 1982-1987 from Melbourne to UCF to complete my BS degree. It was on one of these trips that I happen to see Elizabeth riding her bike along side the road. It was the last time I saw her in person. [link 1983]
