Subject: Last Free Weekend Until
August
Law school starts back today. Time off was oh so brief. Ha
on the air bed. I finally got it pumped up, but twice during
the night I found my butt on the floor. I woke up Sat. morning and
finally said, "This is going back." I deflated it, stuffed it back
in the box, and repackaged the sheets I had bought to go with it.
A lot of wasted effort. I also did not like the fact that the bed
wasn't loungeable. I couldn't really flop down on it to read or
study. I try not to study in bed, but around finals time I always
end up doing so. Saturday I went to see True Crime with Clint
Eastwood, but despite good reviews I didn't think it was very good.
It had a very trite ending. I finally made it out to a hiking
trail on Sunday, vowing to make myself go, esp. as the weather was cool
and I knew it wouldn't last anymore.
The paper has been running little short articles on "trails of the week"
(although sometimes they are for hunters) and so I had a clipping on the
"Swayback Bridge" Trail which looked interesting. Its actually
both a hiking trail and a mountain bike trail, about 10-12 miles long,
and is only about 25 miles from Montgomery. The paper was unclear
as to whether the trail was one-way or a loop so I didn't know when I
started out. That caused some anxiety after I had walked for about
2 1/2 hours and didn't know where I was in terms of finishing. I didn't
know whether to keep expecting a "turn around" or whether I was actually
on a loop back, and although the day was the last one of a cool snap by
12 noon or so it was getting hot, and I had brought only about 16 oz. of
water which was going fast. I met some bikers "coming back" who
had passed me on the way in and they said they had turned around, but
then they seemed to indicate that on "sort of a rough trail" I could
make a loop. Fortunately the rough trail turned out to be the way
I had come in, and I was mighty glad. I think now I am going to
buy some hiking boots, as the trail would be a good place to break them
in. I wore jogging shoes, which were fine for the most part, but
every once in a while the lack of support would cause me to mildly turn
my ankle, so I had to be careful. Oh, what made the trail so interesting
is that some of it was along a river bank and its in that part of our
area known as the "blue ridge" because its actually the tail end of the
Appalachians, so it was forested and rocky. So that was much fun.
I finished up in enough time to go to a concert which was billed as
"heavy metal" because it was an all tuba concert. I didn't
particularly care for the tuba music, but the players were really into
it, and talked about competitions etc. I just couldn't understand
wanting to have an all tuba group as I don't particularly find the tuba
that appealing. So, that and the X-files and The Practice were my
weekend. The mountain biking looked like fun, but I imagine it
requires very good knees. I couldn't believe how the bikers would
bounce/ride right across rocky streams and head right up a hill.
They were pretty young though. So, what's up with you. How
was your weekend? Elizabeth
