DVD's will do to VCR tapes what CDs did to LP records. Block
Buster video rental now has a pretty good section of DVDs and is
in-larging every week. Another couple of years I would expect to
only see DVDs in rental stores now with DVD players under $250.
The quality of DVD is much superior to VCR and unlike tape, does not
degrade over time. If your TV has a SVHS input (most better,
larger ones do) DVD can deliver increased resolution, i.e. much better
picture. DVDs also typically have digital Dolby surround sound so
if you have the equipment, you get fantastic sound. Biggest
drawback, right now there are only players, no DVD recorders.
Still, I'm thinking about getting one early next year. The
industry is still divided over DVD recorders (VHS vs. Betamax all over
again). For the next year or two there will be two or three
formats for DVD recorders, not all compatible with each other.
Still for play back only, what's out now is a lot better than tapes.

And so it was, in a few years VCR tapes were no longer available at Block Buster, they only carried DVDs and in a few more years Block Buster no longer carried DVDs being replaced by on line streaming of videos and all Block Buster stores closed. With the iPod, CDs were replaced by MP3 files which then were largely replaced by online streaming of music.
