Elizabeth,
Well I would not put it at 99% your fault, as they say “it takes two to
tango”. I was young, naïve and inexperienced at the time so I
would expect it to be more than 1% my fault.
My move to Melbourne was a major life changing decision for me and
even to this day it surprises me I did it. You can read more about
it at my Deeply Rooted Story,
Leaving 1976. I’m
not sure what you mean about neglecting my cat as I took him with me to
Melbourne which is another story. One thing I will always remember
about living at my Aunt’s old house and I still tell stories about is
the time I got up in the morning an found a plastic bag on the bottom
shelf of the refrigerator. I looked inside and it was a
dead racoon. You
had come home late and I had already gone to bed and it seems you picked
it up as road kill on your way home. That evening when I had come
home from work you had skinned it and had the skin stretched on a board
to dry.
I don’t know if you recall but I had once met your father. At the
time you were staying at a
tiny house if could call it that, in someone’s back yard in
Micanopy. The “house” was so small that I think my walk in closet
is larger. I had come to visit you one day and I’m not sure
what happened but I got really pissed off and stormed out. I was
about half way back to Gainesville when I begin to calm down and decided
I couldn’t leave like that so I went back. Your car had broken
down and you wanted me to drive you to Coco Beach where your father
lived as he was going to loan you a car. So I drove you to
your fathers, we had dinner with him and I then returned that night.
I do recall that you had issues with Fred as you told me about him on
several occasions. One time you took me out to his house in
Micanopy as he was away but it was very strange that you did so. I
remember you got his 22 pistol and we shot a few rounds.
When I visited you that one time when you and University of Central
Florida and I went to
your place I remember you had no power. I do believe some
years later you sent me a check for the $300 I loaned you.
About my dad and his home, the way he was with not wanting to put mom in
a place to care for her I am sure he will want to stay there until he is
no longer able to care for himself. He went though it with his mom
who lived by herself (after 2 husbands died) until she was like 97.
