In the summer of 2003 AOL sold its brand-new Gainesville datacenter that it had built expecting continued growth of AOL but subscribers were decreasing with AOL losing over 2 million subscribers in 2003. Changing technology also contributed to less space needed for computers. Just a couple years before, computers that took six, eight or more U of rack space now could be done with 1-U servers. Selling the datacenter was disappointing for our IBS group, we were allocated one of the six 15,000 square foot rooms for the hosting of Time Warner computer systems and I had just completed a several month long project to install over 900 computers for the Warner Brother Matrix online game which was still in development. Another project manager in our group had also installed quite a few computer systems for Time Inc. With GTC being sold, we had to move all of these systems out of GTC. Most went to the AOL Manassas datacenter with some going to the Dulles datacenter.
