Movies, TV and Music

Movies

There were a couple of science fiction movies that came out in ’82, who could not love E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial with its cute alien which a bunch of young boys befriend and save from the government who what to capture and study him.  On a more serious note, was the movie Blade Runner with Harrison Ford.  Set in a dark and dreary dystopian future, Harrison Ford plays Deckard,  a “blade runner” whose job it is to hunt down and kill human clones called “replicants”.  In the end Deckard falls in love with a replicant and saves her.  Still one of my favorite movies.

The second Star Trek movie, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was fair with the villain Khan being a match for Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise.  Kirk, Spock and especially Bones looked ever older, you would think that they would have solved or at least slowed down aging in the year 2265.

Then there was the sci-fi military movie Firefox in which Clint Eastwood plays Gant, an air force pilot, who is sent into the Soviet Union to steal a highly advanced Soviet jet fighter code name “Firefox” which the pilot controls with thoughts.  Gant almost crashes the plane before he remembers he has to think in Russian.  Seventy years later we still don’t have such thought control although there has been some limited success.

Macho man movies were popular in ’82 with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Barbarian and   Sylvester Stallone in First Blood, both of which I thought were OK but not worth seeing a second time.

One of the movies I liked best was Gandhi with Ben Kingsley playing Gandhi.  I learned a great deal a about India and the achievements of Gandhi.

Music

There were not a lot of new music in ’82 that I liked well enough to buy the album. "I Love Rock 'n Roll" played a lot on the radio which has one of those phrases that get stuck in your mind all day.  “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” by the Police I really liked, when it played it made me think of my new wife.

TV

On TV “Dallas” was still popular and everyone was talking about it but I never watched it but so I knew who J.R. was. I watched M*A*S*H fairly often, I liked “Magnum, P.I.” and watched it regularly.  Other shows I watched off and on were “The A-Team”, “Newhart” and “Archie Bunker”
