At the end of January received the following letter from Elizabeth in response to the letter I wrote her back in December.
Saturday 1-26-1985
Dear Larry,
I enjoyed your letter. I gave some thought to driving over for the day end
even got out my map, but put it off, being mostly broke at the time.
The week you wrote I happened to be free. Moving, possibly, that is you!
What a step! Like you, I don’t like the old. It almost takes two people
to put each other though school. My dishes pile up; I get broke, and
eat fast foods at times. The best thing about you getting your PH.D. is
you could easily get a professor position, possibly even at UCF. I
rented a room in Oviedo (after leaving Haystack) with a professor at UCF
and he had it made. The salary was low (20’s), but it was a 2 day a week
job. 2-3 days a week he never went in and never on weekends. Also, he
really only had a masters and was taking classes at UCF towards his
Ph.D. I envied him. Austin is supposed to be superb, but really not that
big city-ish. Houston is city all the way! There is a possibility that I
may transfer schools. I wrote to Austin (Univ of Texas) but didn’t
apply. Would you believe I’m thinking of Mississippi! I’m developing a
desire for a computer, slowly, but money is consideration, although I
could get a loan from USF Credit Union. I may ask for advice. Perhaps
we can still have lunch some time.
Elizabeth
Driving over to see me? Having lunch? What was she thinking, what was I thinking, I was married, what would Julie think of an old girlfriend “driving over” to see me? I had Julie, I was in love, or was I, perhaps with the wrong woman? Something I would ask myself over the next forty years.
I’m not sure if I wrote back, likely not for I would not hear from Elizabeth again until thirteen years later.
