Subject: Day in and Day out
Day in and Day out, well it varies a lot. Here is some of the
things I been doing the last week or so. Read requirements
document, read requirements/design/user manual for old system, spend day
on web researching image system vendors, spend days on phone talking to
vendors, have a couple of vendors come in to discuss and demonstrate
their products, go to local vendor for same, go to FOSE computer show at
downtown convention center to look at products, spend a couple of days
rewriting design spec (draft was very poorly written), work with
Microsoft project to create new schedule for project, create
presentation for recommendation to customer, go to status meeting at
customer, read manuals (user guide, installation guide, reference guide)
on products already selected. In the upcoming weeks I'll install
software, configure software, write some code (it's been a long time but
I'll get to do some again), write user guide for system, write test
plan, write some technical proposals for new projects, install system at
customer, possible do the training.
And for the next project, do it all again.
As for dress, my last job was great, it was all casual. I had to
go out and buy a complete new set of cloths but it was worth it as it is
so much more comfortable. DC has generally been a more Coat and
Tie kinda place but is starting to go more casual. Many companies
that were all coat & tie have a "casual Friday" policy. My current
place has such but for most days in which I don't have to meet with the
customer I don't have to wear a tie but it is not quite "casual" (except
Friday). Customer interaction days are always tie and coats are
"expected". I don't every wear a suit, the pants of my only suit
are too small. In cooler weather or more formal presentations I'll
wear a coat but try to avoid it.
I've gotten into bring my lunch again as the people here don't seem to
gather for lunch. I really miss the guys all getting together for
lunch at my last job. I called them and am meeting them Thursday
at a local dive called the Vienna Inn. It is a real experience
that we do every couple of months. It is a sleazy bar type place
that is famous for it's Chile dogs and cheap beer. The waitress
are the type that are rough and tough and give you grief. Like I
said, a real experience. Actually with bringing my lunch I've lost
a couple of pounds, eating at that great cafeteria at my last job
it was hard to not gain weight.
Well it is a beautiful day and Julie just called and wants me to come
home early and go for a bike ride so I'm out of here.
Till tomorrow,
Larry

Subject: What conversion
I meant to say that I just got notice that the hospital is switching
from Word Perfect to Microsoft Word very soon. Also, that a LAN
manager is being added that will allow Information Services "to take
internal control" of any PC in the hospital. Oh Well. Big
Brother. Early WP was great, but truthfully the later versions are
flawed. They do idiosyncratic things I don't like, so I'll welcome
Word. EJ
