Subject: Work Day
I hope no one from the hospital ever accesses this e-mail, but it has
been slow. I have been taking book bags and loading them up with
magazines, junk mail, and loose papers that have accumulated at home and
then bringing it all to work to sort through, read, etc. I loaded
up quite a trash can the other day. I read Dec. Wired just the
other day, finally, but it was a pretty poor issue. It seemed like
the magazine was almost all ads as well. Newstand price is about
five dollars, so it was sort of a waste. My raise, I figured, was
"only" 6%. I can imagine what you lose on a $500 bonus. I
wouldn't turn it down, but it does sound a little paltry. My
brother gets incredible year end bonuses (I think his job title is
something like mortgage analyst.) I think sometimes his have been close
to 10,000. (He does not do badly for someone with ABSOLUTELY no
college.) My car shuttle lottery winnings have been 200.00 each time,
but out of that I only see about 160.00--marginally worth it except it
pays for law books. I had not heard about the book you are
reading. New hardbacks are such a luxury right now. I went through
a phase when I didn't mind the cost, but now I have to be more
judicious. I used to read more historical books/fiction, but not too
much of late, although Poisonwood Bible is rather historical. I am
really enjoying it, so much that it will be letdown when I finish it and
have to find something else. Sometimes after a "good" book I have
difficulty finding another one to engage me. Finally something
will click though. We have an Outback here. Someone told me
the cheesecake was good and humongous. I can't believe you are 46.
Of course, I can't believe I am 50 (except for my knees which feel 80).
Incidentally, my knee is depressing me somewhat, again. For months
I had no problem, then whatever. I had almost reached the point
where I could run a little--not that I would want to run, but without
being able to run I can't even do things like shoot basketballs without
a problem (which I have found I really like to do as it is
mindless--some mindless things go well with law school). I had one
last video to watch last night and wasn't even going to do so because
the others I finally watched were marginal (Gingerbread Man--don't rent
it). My last video was Kundun about the Dalai Lama and it turned
out to be the best one. It was historical to some degree, about
the Chinese taking over Tibet, and slaughtering the Tibetan monks, and
the Dalai Lama's exile. I had watched--gotta go.
