For Thanksgiving I flew down to Gainesville and stayed with Mom and Dad. Thanksgiving Day the Junior clan gathered out at Uncle Gary’s farm in Hawthorne where we had dinner in his barn. After dinner some played horseshoes, talked, or took a nap.

Grandma Mixson wasn’t mobile enough to go to Thanksgiving dinner so we went by to see her at the nursing home. She had just turned 103.

admiring Gary's Thunderbird
Here is Gary in his barn with his barn find, a 1962 Ford
Thunderbird-Sports Roadster. It was all original, even having the
original tires. The story Gary told was that it had been in several
Christmas and Florida Gator homecoming parades, the homecoming queen,
Santa Claus or some other dignitary sitting in the back seat. It was
somewhat of a special car. The Sports Roadster included 48-spoke
Kelsey-Hayes-designed wire wheels and a special fiberglass tonneau cover
for the rear seats, which gave the car the appearance of a two-seat
roadster like the original Thunderbird, although at 17 feet long, it was
twice the size of the original. The Sports Roadster package was
slow-selling due to the high price of the package and the complexity of
the tonneau cover. In 1962 only 1,427 of the model were made. It was
just a really cool car.
