Subject: Re: Turkle
I do not know about Studs Turkle but with a name like Turkle it would
not surprise me that Sherry would be his daughter. I really like Barnes
and Noble, there is one a few blocks from where I live but I usually do
book shopping at the Super Crown because their prices are better. I hate
to go into either because I tend to always spend a $100 when I go.
Although amazon.com[1] is great for searching and finding titles it is not
the same as being in a bookstore with real books. The same issue of
Wired (March 1998) had another article, actually an interview, titled
Reverse-Engineering the Psyche with the "Evolutionary psychologist"
Steven Pinker. It started out with Wired asking the question "How has
computer science contributed to the field of evolutionary psychology?"
The interview goes on to discuss questions about the brain being a
naturally evolved neural computer. Interesting how were just discussing
that the other day and then to run across an article about it. It says
Pinker wrote a '97 released "controversial" book titled "How the Mind
Works". Yet another to add to my reading list.
Wired has a monthly column called Netizens that discusses the social and
political aspects of the Net and its "citizens. Often quite informative.
Yes my mother is large breasted, no doubt she made such a comment.
The moving through and cycling back and forth through stages on
different issues makes a lot of sense to me although I have seen people
"lock" into a stage and are unable to move past it. My brother seems to
be such a case. He still seems to be locked into some stage in which he
is unable to break away from our parents, actually most likely our
mother, and seems to hold some deep resentment and anger. Being a
postman he seems like the ideal type to "go postal".
Yes I remember Wendy's place very well, It was a cute one room house
that sat in the back yard of the owner and overlooked a creek. It had an
enclosed porch which had the dining table and the house was surrounded
by trees. I remember going there and visiting them and
having Constant
Comment tea with honey on a cold winter day.
My new job will start on March 18th. I assume that they will have email
but if not I can use my personal Compuserve account. I'll let you know
where to send to. There is a forwarding account you can always send to
and it will forward to whatever my current address is. I will probably
forward to my Compuserve account for a week or so until I get set up at
the new job.
Well, I going home, until tomorrow. Larry
[1] This is my first reference to Amazon.com which was fast becoming popular for buying books.
I used to CompuServe to access the Internet and work when I was home. I had CompuServe service for probably ten years at this point. Originally at 300 baud, CompuServe now had “high speed” dialup phone service which was at least 4800 baud but on good days, if I could get a line, could get 9600 baud. Baud is used at the time to measure your connection speed, compared to my current Internet connection speed of 300 Mbps, the Internet at the time was slow but with all text email it was fine.
